10 years of smart thinking. 10 years of strong delivery.

From a small team with a big belief that consulting could be better, we’ve grown into a network of specialists helping organisations reach their potential. That network has been built person by person - smart, like-minded people who share the same appetite for clarity, integrity and getting things done.  

Across a decade, we’ve delivered capability and measurable outcomes through data, resourcing, and out-tasking. We’ve shown that when consultancy is practical, people-centred and outcome-led, it becomes a real driver for change.  

Laying our foundations 

Incorporated in Farnham in 2015, we set out with a clear vision: help organisations work smarter, faster and better. From day one we built the business on delivery, trust and partnership, values that still define us now. We are outcome-obsessed, courageous, and committed to doing what we say. 

We started small but with serious intent, and we’ve stayed true to that. We’ve consistently punched above our weight and proven our worth through a steady focus on outcomes rather than activity. We’d seen how transformation programmes could over-promise and under-deliver, and we knew there was a better way. That belief to work with integrity and deliver what we promise, became our DNA, with people always in the centre.

Our first full year of trading in 2016 set the tone for everything that followed. A global cloud computing and virtualisation client put their trust in us to deliver complex project management with precision and care. Those early wins validated our approach - focus on the outcome, prove the impact, and build credibility through delivery. 

Making our mark 

Momentum built quickly. Multi-year contract wins, including work with a major government department addressing some of the UK's most complex public challenges, showed that our consulting model could scale without losing focus or agility. 

2018 brought acceleration. We added new capabilities, formed strategic partnerships, and strengthened our consulting practice. We hired our first employee, a small moment on paper, but a defining one for who we were becoming. We’ve always hired people who share our ethos, and it’s shaped the company we are today. 

Our early events - executive dinners at Ham Yard Hotel and evenings at The Bike Shed in Shoreditch - brought together clients, associates and Optimisers (now known as Client Partners) to share insight and build connections. Those gatherings became early markers of our consulting culture. 

By 2019, we’d matured into a dependable, relationship-driven partner. Repeat business from long-term clients became a defining strength and still is. We centred our approach on sustainable delivery and measurable business outcomes - principles that continue to set us apart today. 

Then came 2020, a year that tested every organisation’s resilience. While many paused, we adapted. We helped clients stabilise under pressure, expanded into the US, formed smart/tasking Inc., and secured our first American contract. We introduced smart/consult, smart/services and smart/bench - giving clients consulting, capability and managed outcomes all under one roof.

Strengthening our structure 

This was a period of consolidation and optimisation - for our clients and for ourselves. We strengthened how we operated, launched the Accelerate graduate programme and refined our consulting frameworks to meet growing demand. By 2023, our team had grown to 22 specialists - analysts, delivery leads, finance experts - all united by the same mindset: get to the heart of the problem, then deliver. 

Our thinking on business acceleration evolved too. Efficiency isn’t speed alone; it’s clarity, alignment and using data to make better decisions. And that thinking led us to smart/sync, our decision-intelligence engine that powers reporting and insight for both us and our clients. 

As our capability grew, so did the sophistication of our delivery. We launched the Resource Management Office (RMO) and smart/PMO - bringing governance and data together with delivery through one consulting model. 

In 2024, a new ownership structure gave us space to refocus and re-energise. We deepened our digital and data capabilities and strengthened our managed PMO service. Gary published his first book Career Catalyst, reaffirming our belief that great outcomes start with great people. And the senior leadership team took fuller shape, becoming a wider group of experienced leaders committed to scaling our expertise, culture and impact. 

2025 saw us move from Farnham to a new headquarters in Farnborough and launch our Consulting Practice with our first Managing Partner. It marked a new era of clearer consulting propositions and new partnerships across technology, consulting and enterprise to strengthen both our capability and our credibility. 

It was also the year we brought Gary’s Company Doctor podcast under the smart/tasking banner - a platform for honest, practical business advice that demystifies complex challenges and helps leaders work smarter. 

10Strong 

Now, in 2026, we mark ten years of progress - a decade shaped by the brilliant people who work with us, clients, and colleagues alike. We’re celebrating the partnerships that made it possible, but we’re also looking ahead with real ambition.

And now we’re building our next chapter on the same foundations: integrity, partnership, real outcomes and the belief that there is always a smarter way to work.
